Sheila and Joel are married real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. When Sheila dies, their lives take a dark turn.
Sheila (Drew Barrymore) e Joel (Timothy Olyphant) sono marito e moglie, entrambi agenti immobiliari che vivono insieme alla figlia adolescente a Santa Clarita, sobborgo di Los Angeles. La famiglia conduce una vita abbastanza insoddisfacente e mediocre, fino a quando Sheila attraversa un drastico cambiamento che porterà anche la sua famiglia ad affrontare un percorso di morte e distruzione: Sheila infatti perderà la vita ma ritornerà come non morta e con un forte appetito per la carne umana. Inizia così questa “dieta” molto particolare ma, a quanto sembra, ricca di benefici.
