Nell'anno 8.000 a.C. un giovane sciamano di una tribù di cavernicoli viene rapito da una strana astronave di forma piramidale, nella quale viene teletrasportato da un raggio luminoso.
Nel 1928 in Egitto, durante alcuni scavi archeologici nella piana di Giza, il ricercatore americano Robert Langford porta alla luce un enorme coperchio di pietra e, cosa ancor più sbalorditiva, un grande anello sepolto sotto di esso, che porta incisi dei geroglifici, non tutti normali geroglifici egizi. Insieme a lui vi è la figlia Catherine, una bambina di 9 anni, già esperta appassionata lettrice di geroglifici, che istintivamente ruba un amuleto dorato raffigurante l'occhio del malvagio Ra, trovato tra i vari reperti appena scoperti. Tutto il materiale ritrovato viene trasferito negli Stati Uniti, per essere sottoposto ad accurate analisi.
Nel 1994 le ricerche sul materiale ritrovato continuano sotto la supervisione dei militari. A capo dell'équipe di ricercatori c'è la dott.ssa Catherine Langford, la quale decide di chiedere aiuto al dottor Daniel Jackson, un giovane ricercatore esperto di geroglifici e lingue antiche, deriso dalla comunità scientifica per le sue teorie sull'origine della civiltà egizia. Egli crede infatti che gli antichi egizi abbiano già trovato sul posto le piramidi ed è convinto che sia necessario retrodatare la loro età. Sfrattato dall'appartamento, sul lastrico e senza lavoro a causa delle sue teorie, non può far altro che accettare l'offerta di Catherine.
Egyptologist and linguist Daniel Jackson, Ph.D. is invited by Catherine Langford to translate Egyptian hieroglyphs on cover stones that her father had unearthed in Giza, Egypt in 1928. Jackson is taken to a U.S. Air Force installation and told the project is classified information by its commander Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil. Jackson determines that the hieroglyphs refer to a "stargate" which uses constellations as spatial coordinates. On this revelation, Jackson is shown that the base has this Stargate, also discovered by Langford's father. They use Jackson's coordinates to align the Stargate's metal ring with markings along its outside, and once all seven are locked in, a wormhole opens, connecting the Stargate with a distant planet. Jackson joins O'Neil and other soldiers as they pass through the wormhole.
