Dopo aver mosso i primi passi in Il Risveglio della Forza, la coraggiosa Rey (Daisy Ridley) prende in mano le redini del suo destino nel secondo capitolo della nuova trilogia ambientata trent'anni dopo Il Ritorno dello Jedi, Star Wars: Gli ultimi Jedi. La Forza scorre nella giovane mercante di rottami, ma ha bisogno di un maestro che le insegni a controllarla. Rivelata la mappa che traccia la rotta per il nascondiglio segreto di Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), la ragazza attraversa l'universo fino al pianeta sperduto dove il cavaliere jedi si è ritirato in esilio volontario. Si inerpica lungo sentieri impervi, perlustra gli angoli più selvaggi dell'isola per incrociare lo sguardo del leggendario guerriero che ha combattuto e sconfitto l'Impero, e porgergli la vecchia spada laser appartenuta alla sua famiglia. Intuitiva e tenace, Rey è la capofila delle nuove leve Jedi, pronta a contrastare le forze del sinistro Primo Ordine, in aiuto della Resistenza. Accanto a lei ritornano l'ex assaltatore Finn (John Boyega), il pilota di X-wing Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), l'occhialuta aliena Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o tramite performance capture) e il Generale Leia Organa (nell'ultima interpretazione di Carrie Fisher). Tra i servitori del Lato Oscuro, con il volto sfregiato dall'ultimo scontro con Rey, ritroviamo Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), influenzato dalla misteriosa figura del Leader Supremo Snoke (Andy Serkis tramite performance capture). Diretto dal fan della trilogia originale, Rian Johnson, nell'Episodio VIII J.J. Abrams torna in veste di produttore esecutivo.
