Harry Hinkle è un giovane operatore della CBS che viene inviato a riprendere una partita di football americano al Cleveland Stadium. In quella stessa partita, viene travolto dal giocatore dei Cleveland Browns, Luther Jackson, che gli causa lievi danni. Arrivato in ospedale, Willie, cognato di Harry, dopo aver scoperto che l'incidente non era grave, decide nonostante tutto di sporgere denuncia e chiedere un rimborso di un milione di dollari all'assicurazione. Incapace di convincere Harry a mentire sulla sua condizione di salute, Willie riceve una telefonata da Sandy, ex moglie di Harry, che è scappata con un altro uomo. Sandy, interessata alla condizione di salute del marito, fa credere a Harry che ci sono ancora speranze che lei ritorni. Harry allora si lascia convincere dal cognato e sostiene di fronte ai medici di avere tre dita e una gamba paralizzata; il medico si accorge di una vertebra schiacciata che in realtà Harry si era procurato da piccolo, ma che non aveva mai curato per mancanza di denaro.
Mentre l'assicurazione è molto dubbiosa sul fatto che Harry sia veramente in condizioni disastrose, i medici decidono, con il consenso di Willie, di sottoporre Harry a numerose visite che garantiscano l'invalidità del ragazzo. Per passare le visite senza nessun problema, Willie inietta a Harry un medicinale paralizzante nelle zone indicate ma i medici dichiarano che le visite fatte sono state inconcludenti. L'assicurazione decide allora di piazzare dei microfoni nella casa di Harry in modo tale da riuscire a scoprire se l'uomo mente o meno. Nel frattempo Luther Jackson, dispiaciuto dell'incidente, regala a Harry una sedia telecomandata per muoversi solo con l'uso di una mano. Luther, sentendosi molto in colpa per l'accaduto, salta alcune partite pur di stare al servizio di Harry che inizia, dato il buon e dolce carattere di Luther, a pensare di farla finita con quella messinscena.
Contemporaneamente, Sandy chiama di nuovo Harry e gli dice di voler venire a fargli visita; l'uomo si fa dare una mano dal suo amico Luther a preparare una graziosa cenetta per l'occasione. Mentre Willie sta andando a trovare Harry, scopre i microfoni nascosti e scrive su un pezzo di carta a Harry di non parlare perché li avrebbero potuti sentire. Dopo aver mandato Luther all'aeroporto a prendere Sandy, i due decidono di tenere i microfoni in modo da far credere agli assicuratori che avrebbero devoluto ai disabili i soldi del risarcimento. Mentre Luther e Sandy sono in macchina per il ritorno a casa, Luther capisce dai discorsi di Sandy che lei non è più interessata al marito e quando arrivano a casa, Luther si sente mortificato nel vedere il povero Harry essere illuso dalla donna. Finita la cena, Sandy dice a Harry di aver imparato a cucinare e che sarebbe rimasta con Harry per tutto il tempo necessario, convincendolo a mandare via Luther.
Luther, preso dai sensi di colpa nel vedere il povero amico imbrogliato dalla donna, va nel bar di suo padre e inizia a bere provocando una rissa. Nel frattempo Harry e Willie annunciano a Sandy e ai microfoni che avrebbero dato tutto il denaro in donazione durante la partita di rugby in onore di Harry. Sandy, non credendo alla cosa, chiama Willie fuori la porta e gli rivela di essere a conoscenza del fatto che sia tutta una finzione. Facendosi dire quali siano i veri piani, la ragazza accetta di tener buono Harry solo in cambio di denaro che Willie senza preoccupazioni le promette.
Mentre Sandy e Harry guardano la TV, vengono a conoscenza della rissa e del fermo per stato di ebrezza di Luther il quale, dopo aver passato una nottata in prigione, era stato sospeso a tempo indeterminato. Harry sentita la notizia, chiama Willie tentando di convincerlo ad aiutare Luther ma Willie dichiara di stare trattando con quelli dell'assicurazione. Stanco e preso in giro, Harry urla contro Sandy di voler dire tutta la verità ma la donna sentendo quelle parole, tenta in tutti i modi di abbindolare il povero Harry che casca tra le sue braccia senza opporre resistenza.
Willie dà la notizia a Sandy e Harry di aver ottenuto dagli assicuratori 200.000 dollari e che finalmente possono festeggiare. A quel punto Sandy dichiara di volere 20.000 dollari per potersi pagare una parte da cantante alla tv facendo capire ad Harry che in realtà era tornata solo per coronare il suo sogno di divenire cantante e non per lui. Dall'altra parte dell'isolato, però, uno degli investigatori pagati dell'assicurazione, non credendo ancora alla messincescena, dice all'altro di lasciare la telecamera accesa mentre lui si precipita a casa di Harry per cercare di far rivelare tutto. Una volta arrivato, inizia a levare tutti i microfoni e, proprio davanti alla finestra, fa dei commenti razzisti su Luther, suscitando rabbia da parte di Harry che si alza in piedi e con la mano ferita lo colpisce con un pugno in faccia. L'investigatore, soddisfatto, si alza e chiede al collega di fronte se ha ripreso la scena, ma l'amico gli risponde che era troppo buio per vedere qualcosa. Nel frattempo, Willie e Sandy rimproverano Harry di quell'atto. Harry, preso dall'ira del momento, propone all'investigatore di ripetere la scena per rigirarla.
Harry, dopo aver preso a pugni l'investigatore per rigirare la scena, inizia a mostrare una serie di acrobazie che non avrebbe potuto fare se fosse stato davvero invalido. Dopo aver detto alla moglie di non volerla più vedere, Harry esce dalla porta di casa e si reca presso lo stadio da rugby dove incontra il suo amico Luther Jackson, che vedendolo in buone condizioni capisce la truffa. Harry gli dice che non valeva la pena picchiarsi per difendere la faccia di Harry Hinkle, visto che, come dicevano tutti, era un imbroglione, e gli chiede di picchiarlo. Luther gli chiede perché l'ha fatto e gli dice che non è intenzionato a picchiarlo. Harry risponde che l'ha fatto solo per soldi e che è pentito. Luther allora gli dice che in realtà ha lasciato il rugby per partire e forse andare a fare la lotta libera facendosi chiamare L'angelo nero.
Harry rimane lì fermo con un pallone da rugby in mano e osserva l'amico andarsene. Quando Luther è abbastanza lontano, Harry gli urla che ha dimenticato il pallone e glielo lancia con il piede che prima fingeva fosse paralizzato. Luther risponde al lancio e, correndo, marca Harry che cade a terra con un colpo secco. Luther, preoccupato che sia successo qualcosa di grave, chiede a Harry se sta bene e quest'ultimo finge di sentire un telefono che squilla. Quando Luther gli chiede quanti di lui vede, Harry risponde dicendo due: BoomBoom Jackson e un altro salame che vuole farsi chiamare L'angelo nero.
CBS cameraman Harry Hinkle (Jack Lemmon) gets injured when football player Luther "Boom Boom" Jackson (Ron Rich) of the Cleveland Browns runs into him while he is running a hand-held sideline camera during a home game at Municipal Stadium. Harry's injuries are minor, but his conniving lawyer brother-in-law William H. "Whiplash Willie" Gingrich (Walter Matthau) convinces him to pretend that his leg and hand have been partially paralyzed, so they can receive a huge indemnity from the insurance company.[3] Harry reluctantly goes along with the scheme because he is still in love with his ex-wife, Sandy (Judi West), and being injured might bring her back.
The insurance company lawyers at O'Brien, Thompson and Kincaid (Harry Holcombe, Les Tremayne, and Lauren Gilbert) suspect that the paralysis is a fake. All but one of their medical experts say that it is real, convinced by the remnants of a compressed vertebra Hinkle suffered as a child, and Hinkle's responses, helped by the numbing shots of novocaine Gingrich has had a paroled dentist (Ned Glass) give him. The one holdout, German Professor Winterhalter (Sig Ruman), is convinced that Hinkle is a fake.
With no medical evidence to base their case on, O'Brien, Thompson and Kincaid hire Cleveland's best private detective, Chester Purkey (Cliff Osmond), to keep Hinkle under constant surveillance. However, Gingrich sees Purkey entering the apartment building across the street and lets Hinkle know they are being watched and recorded – and after Sandy returns, warns him not to indulge in any hanky-panky with her. Knowing now that he has a way to feed the insurance company lawyers misinformation, through the watching P.I.s, he incorporates the "Harry Hinkle Foundation", a non-profit charity to which all the proceeds of any settlement are to go, above and beyond actual medical expenses. When Sandy questions Gingrich about this in private, he tells her that it's just a scam to put pressure on the insurance company to settle, and that there will be enough money in the settlement for everyone to get some.
Hinkle begins to enjoy having Sandy back again, but he also starts to see how Boom-Boom's guilt over the accident is affecting him, especially when he is booed by the fans for his lackluster performance on the field, and then grounded by the team for getting drunk and involved in a bar fight. Hinkle wants Gingrich to help out Boom-Boom by representing him, but, to Hinkle's displeasure, Gingrich says he is too busy negotiating with O'Brien, Thompson & Kincaid. Hinkle also finds out that Sandy is back by his side strictly out of greed, to get enough money to put on a first class singing act and play the Persian Room.
Hinkle shows up with the $200,000 settlement check, and shouts up from the street to Purkey that the game is over. When Gingrich brings the check upstairs, Hinkle is distressed by the avaricious behavior of Sandy. Meanwhile, Purkey has a plan to get Hinkle to break down: he shows up at the apartment to collect his hidden microphones, and while he is there begins to make racist remarks about Boom-Boom and "our black brothers" getting out of hand. Hinkle, incensed, jumps up out his wheelchair and decks Purkey, who gets up and yells across the street to his assistant Max (Noam Pitlik) to find out if he got the shot. Told that he's not sure because "It's a little dark", Hinkle asks Purkey if he'd like a second take, turns on a light and advises the cameraman how to set his exposure. He then punches Purkey again, and follows up by going on a tear around the apartment, swinging from curtain rods and bouncing on the bed, all to show that he is not actually injured. Sandy is crawling on the floor looking for her lost contact lens, and just before he leaves the apartment, Hinkle roughly pushes her down to the ground with his foot.
Purkey packs up his equipment to leave, but Gingrich tells him to keep rolling, and launches into a speech about his having no idea that his client (Hinkle) was deceiving him, but announcing his intention of suing the insurance company lawyers for invasion of privacy, and reporting Purkey's racist remarks to various organizations. As he proceeds, a crunching sound lets him know that he's just stepped on Sandy's contact lens.
Hinkle drives to the football stadium where he meets Boom-Boom sitting on the bench on the field, ready to leave the team, and perhaps become a wrestler named "The Dark Angel". Hinkle manages to snap Boom-Boom out of his funk, and the two run down the fields passing and lateraling a football back and forth between them.
