Sospeso dal servizio per i suoi metodi poco ortodossi - ha freddato due evasi, al momento della loro cattura - il commissario Giorgio Caneparo decide di vendicare, agendo in proprio, la morte di un collega assassinato perché in procinto di scoprire una temuta banda di rapinatori. Riuscito a introdursi nel mondo della malavita, partecipa, come autista, a un sanguinoso colpo in banca organizzato da un uomo che si fa chiamare Padulo. Condotti i malviventi dopo una spericolata corsa per le vie di Milano nella sede stessa della Questura, Caneparo - sapendo che le gesta della banda facevano parte di un piano eversivo, mirante a favorire, seminando morte e paura, l'avvento di un regime autoritario - scopre che il presunto Padulo è, in realtà, un editore fascista di Bergamo che agisce a sua volta, per conto di qualcuno che si tiene nell'ombra. Con uno stratagemma, Caneparo riesce a dare un volto anche a quest'ultimo - si tratta addirittura di un alto funzionario di polizia - e, dopo aver respinto un suo invito a entrare nell'"organizzazione" eversiva, lo uccide.

He managed to enter the world of crime, he participates, as a driver, a bloody blow in the bank organized by a man who calls himself Padulo. Conducted the criminals after a reckless run through the streets of Milan in the headquarters of the police headquarters, Caneparo - knowing that the exploits of the band were part of a subversive plan, aimed at fostering, by sowing death and fear, the advent of an authoritarian regime - he discovers that the alleged Padulo is, in reality, a Fascist publisher of Bergamo acting in turn, on behalf of someone held in the shadows. With a stratagem, Caneparo manages to give a face to the latter - it is even a high-ranking police officer - and, after rejecting his invitation to enter the subversive "organization", he kills him.
