Tanto tempo, tanta energia, tanti soldi spesi per processare gente che probabilmente morirà durante i dibattimenti e quando arriverà ad una condanna sarà troppo anziana per finire in carcere. Non è meglio lasciar perdere? Chiudere un capitolo II Guerra Mondiale, ormai preistoria per i ritmi di oggi e dimenticare? No. E non solo per un motivo morale ma anche per alcune ragioni pratiche. Intanto stabilire il principio che in nessun luogo e in nessun tempo la guerra possa giustificare crimini del genere. Poi perchè l'esame storico di quello che è successo fa capire molte cose del presente, molti meccanismi che sono tutt'ora validi. Come possa succedere, per esempio, che indagini che sono già praticamente concluse, già pronte ad indicare il nome dei colpevoli, basta arrestarli, si possano insabbiare per anni per motivi politici legati al contesto nazionale e internazionale. Come possa succedere che la giustizia passi in secondo piano rispetto alla ragione di stato, ai doveri verso gli alleati e alla sicurezza nazionale.
