Sergio Benvenuti, ragazzo romano piuttosto ingenuo ed impacciato nei modi, riesce a trovare lavoro come venditore porta a porta in una casa editrice di una collana musicale. Forse, è l'occasione giusta per poter "ingranare" e, quindi, sposare Rossella con la quale è fidanzato da quattro anni. Almeno questa è la sua giustificazione davanti al cruento padre di lei, in allarme per l'adorata figlia. Ma il lavoro non va, infatti è ultimo nella classifica delle vendite. Amareggiato, telefona alla sua collega capolista Nadia Vandelli,che non ha mai visto, una ragazza spigliata con il pallino della musica leggera - specie quella di Lucio Dalla - proponendogli di unire il loro lavoro per un giorno in modo che lui possa fare un po' di tirocinio. L'indomani, però, si trova da solo davanti all'abitazione del cliente, l'architetto Manuel Fantoni. Stanco di aspettare Nadia - che nel frattempo è intrappolata in una fila per prenotare dei posti ad un concerto di Dalla - decide di salire, pensando che forse la ragazza è già entrata. Previsione errata, Nadia non c'è e il cliente è un uomo sulla quarantina, con l'aria da playboy incallito che, a quanto pare, ha molta voglia di parlare di sé. Tanto che Sergio si ritrova nella veste di attento ascoltatore, addirittura estasiato dalle innumerevoli avventure del neoamico. Avventure che si dichiareranno fittizie come si rivelerà fittizio il suo nome, e questo lo dichiara il maresciallo giunto sul luogo per arrestarlo. Sergio, quindi, si ritrova solo in quell'appartamento pieno di storie mai avvenute. Per gioco cerca di rifare il verso all'amico e si veste dei suoi panni. E' l'inizio di una bugia che prenderà, in seguito, la dimensione di una spirale, dalla quale sembra impossibile uscire. La farsa ha inizio con il suono del campanello alla porta: è Nadia che si scusa del ritardo chiedendo se si è visto un suo collega, Sergio Benvenuti. "No, non si è visto" è la risposta di Sergio. Poi, anche lei cede al fascino delle storie inventate da Sergio/Manuel, il cui aspetto insignificante si riveste, sotto gli occhi di Nadia, di un alone fascinosamente misterioso: nuovo abbigliamento cucito interamente dalle bugie e all'atmosfera del luogo. Quando Sergio ritorna a casa, vorrebbe definire la cosa, spiegare, ma, per varie circostanze, non ci riesce ed il gioco va avanti fin quando il padre di Rossella ristabilisce l'ordine e tutto rientra nella normalità: Sergio e Nadia si sposeranno rispettivamente con i loro "veri" partners. Si ritrovano dopo qualche anno: lui, venditore affermato con un figlio a carico; lei, ricca benestante con un desiderio avverato: Dalla ha inciso la sua canzone. Tutto fila liscio, ma, forse è proprio questa normalità a rendere grigia la loro vita, perciò basta una frase del passato "gioco" che ogni cosa ricomincia a girare come in una spirale: l'illusione prevale di nuovo sulla quotidianità della vita.
Sergio Benvenuti, a somewhat naive and clumsy Roman boy, finds work as a door-to-door salesman in a publishing house of a music collar. It is the beginning of a lie that will then take the dimension of a spiral, from which it seems impossible to get out. The farce begins with the bell ringing in the door: Nadia apologizes for the delay asking if she has seen a colleague, Sergio Benvenuti. "No, not seen" is Sergio's answer. Then, she also gives the charm of the stories invented by Sergio / Manuel, whose insignificant aspect, under Nadia's eyes, is a fascinatingly mysterious solo: new clothes sewn entirely from lies and the atmosphere of the place. When Sergio returns home, he would like to define it, explain, but under various circumstances he fails and the game goes on as Rossella's father reinstates the order and everything goes back to normal: Sergio and Nadia will marry respectively Their "real" partners. They find themselves after a few years: he, an affirmed seller with a dependent son; She, wealthy rich with an averse desire: From her he recorded her song.
