Michele Abbagnano, quarantacinquenne menomato nella mano sinistra e disoccupato non per cattiva volontà, per mantenere se stesso e l'asmatico figlioletto Cazzillo è solito vendere clandestinamente caffè, latte e cappuccino sul treno che nelle ultime ore della notte viaggia da Vallo della Lucania a Napoli. Notissimo ai viaggiatori abituali - operai, piccoli impiegati o imbroglioncelli come lui Michele incrementa le sue del resto modeste entrate con altri piccoli servizi, come svegliare i dormiglioni in prossimità delle piccole stazioni, coprire le effusioni degli amanti clandestini; e così via. La figura dell'Abbagnano ha finito per fare parte del treno n. 818. Una notte, però, il destino si accanisce contro di lui. Un "boss", che sa della sua attività, tenta di ricattarlo e di imporgli una "protezione" che gli ridurrebbe lo scarso guadagno. Cazzillo, stanco di stare nel collegio al quale è stato affidato dal padre che sognerebbe un futuro migliore per lui, è fuggito e si trova sul convoglio. Lo stesso personale del treno, messo in allarme da inesorabili telegrammi ministeriali e in attesa dell'arrivo di un Ispettore Capo, si trova costretto ad una estenuante e notturna caccia all'uomo. Quando la stazione di Napoli è ormai in vista, Michele finisce nelle mani dei cacciatori: verrà aiutato un po' da tutti e, soprattutto, verrà salvato da una astuta sceneggiata del figlioletto. Il personale del treno, i poliziotti e lo stesso Ispettore se la caveranno non firmando il verbale dell'arresto e rimbalzandoselo vicendevolmente.
Michele Abbagnano, forty-five year old in his left hand and unemployed not for a bad will to keep himself and his asthmatic baby Cazzillo is usually selling coffee, milk and cappuccino on the train that in the last hours of the night travels from Vallo della Lucania to Naples. Familiar to ordinary travelers - workers, small clerks or crickets like him, Michele increases his modest entrances with other small services, such as waking the dormiglions near the small stations, covering the effusions of clandestine lovers; and so on. Abagnano's figure ended up being part of train no. 818. One night, though, fate against him. A "boss", who knows about his business, tries to blackmail him and impose a "protection" that would reduce his poor earnings. Cazzillo, tired of staying in the college he was entrusted to by his father who dreams of a better future for him, has fled and is on the convoy. The same train crew, alarmed by inexorable ministerial telegrams and awaiting the arrival of a Chief Inspector, is forced into a grueling and night-time hunt for man. When Naples station is now in sight, Michele ends up in the hands of hunters: it will be helped a bit by everyone and, above all, will be rescued by a crazy drummer's screenplay. The train staff, the cops, and the same inspector will cave it without signing the arrest report and bouncing off each other.
