Chicago. Jim è un quarantenne, padre di famiglia, sposato con Cheryl e padre di tre bambini, le due femmine Ruby e Gracie e l'ultimo arrivato, il maschio Kyle. Dietro questa facciata, in realtà Jim racchiude in sé gli stereotipi più enfatizzati dell'uomo pigro e maschilista; spesso si dimostra immaturo e irresponsabile per la sua età, tanto da passare le sue giornate a oziare, cercando di trovare quanto prima il tempo di dedicarsi alle sue più grandi passioni, ovvero mangiare, sbronzarsi con gli amici e suonare blues con la sua band. Proprio questo stile di vita lo porta spesso e volentieri a cacciarsi in qualche guaio o a combinare qualche misfatto: è a questo punto che deve intervenire Cheryl, che in qualche modo riesce ogni volta a togliere il marito dai guai, e che trova sempre la forza di perdonarlo, nella vana speranza che prima o poi diventi maturo e responsabile.
A fare da contorno alle vicende di Jim e Cheryl ci sono Andy e Dana, rispettivamente fratello e sorella minore di Cheryl, in pratica una "ingombrante" presenza fissa in casa della coppia. Andy, che oltre a essere il migliore amico di Jim è anche suo collega di lavoro, spesso resta invischiato suo malgrado nei guai causati dal cognato; i suoi tentativi di risolvere la situazione, sovente, non fanno altro che peggiorarla irrimediabilmente. Jim è invece particolarmente insofferente verso Dana, che non lo ritiene all'altezza di Cheryl e non manca mai di farglielo notare; la ragazza è inoltre sempre pronta a criticare il cognato in ogni sua iniziativa, e appena può non perde occasione di aiutare la sorella a smascherare i misfatti del marito.
Jim is a lovable suburban father. Much like his real-life counterpart, Jim's character is noted as a fan of blues music, as well as the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Blackhawks. Together with his wife Cheryl, they have three children, daughters Ruby and Gracie and son Kyle. In the seventh season they become parents of twins Jonathan and Gordon.
Jim often finds himself in messy situations, because his laziness inclines him to search for alternative ways to get things done with less effort. While Cheryl's brother Andy may be Jim's best friend, her sister Dana frequently teams up with Cheryl against Jim. He also prefers to lie to Cheryl and Dana to do his own activities but they end up backfiring on him. He hates losing to women, especially if Cheryl or Dana find out. He doesn't like people interrupting him when he talks, so he speaks over them to shut them up. Jim often makes an example of Andy, who for most of the series does not have a steady girlfriend. Dana and Jim bicker constantly, but Dana flirts with Jim when she's drunk, discovering after one such event that she respects Jim as a loving father despite his flaws.
