A Roma, nel '600, il ricchissimo strozzino don Arpagone, che vive con i due figli Cleante ed Elisa, presta soldi perfino al Papa ed è talmente avaro da affamare i servi e perfino i cavalli della sua carrozza. Egli conserva grandi tesori nella cassaforte che tiene accanto al letto e fra le sue moltissime proprietà c'è un bordello diretto dalla furba Frosina. Poiché il potente cardinale Spinosi cerca di costringerlo col ricatto ad ammogliarsi con sua sorella Isabella, che ha già assassinato tre mariti per motivi d'interesse, don Arpagone, per evitare un matrimonio così pericoloso, inventa di esser prossimo a sposare una inesistente fidanzata incinta e incarica Frosina di scovargli subito una moglie giovane e bella. Ma nessuna delle ragazze che la mezzana gli propone, gli piace. Intanto Elisa ha un amore segreto per il giovane segretario del padre, Valerio, e Cleante ama altrettanto segretamente la bella Mariana che vive con la madre Elvira in grande povertà. Quando le due poverette vengono sfrattate, Cleante cerca invano di aiutarle, tentando di ottenere un prestito a "babbo morto" ma è scoperto dal padre, il quale, vista per caso la ragazza, che non conosceva, la chiede in moglie. Mariana è costretta ad accettare per evitare alla madre ammalata di finire all'ospizio. Si fanno dunque i preparativi delle nozze, che Arpagone vuole siano celebrate in gran fretta, insieme a quelle del suoi figli, ai quali ha destinato coniugi anziani, ma molto ricchi. Improvvisamente appare don Guglielmo d'Avalos, in realtà il padre di Mariana e di Valerio, e il marito di Elvira: il ricco gentiluomo, felice di aver ritrovato moglie e figli, che credeva morti da anni, si offre di pagare tutte le spese dei matrimoni di Mariana con Cleante e di Valerio con Elisa, e Arpagone, poiché le feste non gli costeranno nulla, accetta con entusiasmo. Mentre il cardinal Spinosi viene esiliato per le sue molte colpe, insieme alla sorella assassina, Arpagone, che si era finto derubato dei suoi tesori per timore dell'avidità dell'alto prelato, finirà con l'avere una nuova immensa cassaforte ad orologeria per proteggere le sue ricchezze, e sposerà Frosina, che da tempo desiderava di diventare sua moglie.
