Durante la Grande Depressione, un'orfana di nome Bertha Thompson incontra su un treno merci il sindacalista Big Bill Shelly di cui si innamora ma viene abbandonata subito dopo. Successivamente diviene complice di un baro e con il suo aiuto liberano Shelly dal carcere; insieme fanno una serie di rapine ai treni e in banca al fine di attaccare lo schiavista della grande ferrovia, sig. Sartoris, e uscire dalla crisi della grande depressione......................
Based on "Sister of the Road," the fictionalized autobiography of radical and transient Bertha Thompson as written by physician Dr. Ben L. Reitman, 'Boxcar' Bertha Thompson, a woman labor organizer in Arkansas during the violence-filled Depression of the early '30's meets up with rabble-rousing union man 'Big' Bill Shelly and they team up to fight the corrupt railroad establishment and she is eventually sucked into a life of crime with him.
