In Irlanda, il giovane Gerry Conlon, coinvolto in una guerriglia urbana con gli inglesi e con l'IRA, ripara in Inghilterra con l'amico Paul Hill che, arrestato per un attentato che distrugge un pub e sottoposto a violente pressioni, suo malgrado lo denuncia. Gerry, maltrattato per sette giorni dalla polizia, che minaccia di uccidergli il padre Giuseppe, firma una falsa dichiarazione coinvolgendo due hippy della comune dove si era rifugiato con Hill: Paddy Armstrong e Carole Richardson. La polizia arresta poi la zia Annie ed il padre per favoreggiamento. Dopo un processo iniquo, orchestrato dall'ispettore Robert Dixon, che ha coordinato arresti e interrogatori preliminari, tutti vengono condannati. Dopo 15 anni Gerry e il padre, che dividono la cella, scoprono il vero attentatore, Joseph McAndrew. La polizia non ha voluto riaprire il processo, e Giuseppe, tramite l'avvocatessa Gareth Peirce, cerca di dimostrare la verità. Ma la malferma salute lo stronca, ed il figlio, che in carcere ha imparato ad apprezzarne le qualità umane e morali, ne raccoglie l'eredità. Per un fortuito equivoco, la Peirce, che sta consultando, col controllo di Dixon, il fascicolo di Giuseppe, riesce a prendere visione di quello di Gerry, e trova le prove occultate alla difesa da Dixon al processo, ossia la cruciale testimonianza di un barbone irlandese, Charlie Burke, che ha incontrato Gerry e Paul in un parco londinese la notte dell'attentato, la cui esistenza è stata sempre negata dagli inquirenti, e che avrebbe scagionato tutti gli imputati ed i loro presunti complici. Nel processo che segue, ottenuto anche grazie al vasto movimento d'opinione pubblica sorto attorno al clamoroso caso, emerge la verità e tutti vengono liberati.
In Ireland, the young Gerry Conlon, involved in urban warfare with the British and the IRA, repairs to England with his friend Paul Hill who was arrested for an attack that destroys a pub and subjected to violent pressure, despite the complaint. Gerry, mistreated for seven days by the police, threatening to kill them his father Giuseppe, signing a false statement involving two of hippy commune where he had taken refuge with Hill: Paddy Armstrong and Carole Richardson. The police then stopped the aunt Annie and the father for aiding and abetting. After an unfair trial, orchestrated by the Inspector Robert Dixon, who coordinated arrests and preliminary interrogations, all are condemned. After 15 years Gerry and his father, which divide the cell, they discover the true assassin, Joseph McAndrew. The police did not want to reopen the process, and Joseph, through the lawyer Gareth Peirce, tries to prove the truth. But poor health crushes him, and his son, who in prison has learned to appreciate the human and moral qualities, it reflects the heritage. By a fluke of misunderstanding, the Peirce, who is consulting, with Dixon control, a record of Joseph, unable to look through to Gerry, and find the evidence hidden from defense by Dixon in the process, namely the crucial testimony of a bum Irish, Charlie Burke, who met Gerry and Paul in a London park the night of the attack, the existence of which has always been denied by the investigators, and that would have exonerated all the accused and their alleged accomplices. In the process below, obtained thanks to the vast movement of public opinion arose around the sensational case, truth emerges and all are released.
