Lo show di Tempe è uno dei più intensi del The River Tour, forse anche perché quello in cui Bruce prende atto con amarezza dell’elezione alla presidenza di Ronald Reagan. Da sottolineare in questo spettacolo, la performance di “Drive All Night” o la splendida intro a “The River” con “Once Upon A Time In The West” interpretata da Roy Bittan. Una divertente curiosità: secondo Dave Marsh, durante “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)” Bruce cadde rovinosamente su un operatore senza che la band e il pubblico se ne accorgessero: “Bruce ha fatto uno dei suoi soliti salti sui diffusori a lato del palco, ma questa volta ha perso l’equilibrio… all’improvviso è apparsa la chitarra in cima alle casse, poi un paio di mani e alla fine il capo di Springsteen con sorriso un po’ imbarazzato sul volto. Scuotendo la testa, è risalito sul palco e, rimessosi la tracolla della chitarra, è tornato in azione, come se niente fosse”.

Il 4 dicembre 2015 Columbia Records ha pubblicato The Ties That Bind: The River Collection di Bruce Springsteen. Il cofanetto, che offre una retrospettiva completa sul periodo di The River, contiene 52 brani con tantissimo materiale inedito (4 CD), e 4 ore di immagini inedite (2 Bluray). Il box set comprende: il doppio album The River originale; la prima release ufficiale di The River: Single Album; un CD di outtake 1979/80; un Bluray con immagini mai viste prima, con nuovo montaggio e riprese multicamera, tratte dal famoso show di Springsteen del 1980 a Tempe, in Arizona (definito da tutti un concerto imperdibile e mai pubblicato); un nuovo documentario su The River intitolato The Ties That Bind e un libro illustrato contenente 200 foto rare o inedite e cimeli più un nuovo saggio di Mikal Gilmore.
