In Vietnam, durante il terzo anno di guerra, il capitano Willard viene inviato ai confini della Cambogia per una missione segreta e delicatissima: dovrà uccidere il colonnello Kurtz che, impazzito, sta combattendo una sua guerra privata. Willard risale un fiume e si trova a percorrere tutti i gironi dell'inferno. I suoi compagni di viaggio sono degli squinternati. Quasi nulla è comprensibile: gli attacchi con gli elicotteri al ritmo di Wagner, un ufficiale che fa surf sotto i bombardamenti, battaglie all'insegna del "napalm", che rendono la scena simile a quella di una Disneyland allucinata. Trova Kurtz-Brando in un incontro che il regista carica con toni epici e misteriosi: Brando, monumento più che mai, fotografato nella penombra, sembra qualcosa di più o di meno di un essere umano. Kurtz spiega la sua filosofia: occorre uccidere, distruggere e mutilare, anche donne e bambini, se la causa è giusta. In pratica il colonnello giustifica i propri delitti in nome della difesa della patria. È dunque un eroe o un pazzo sanguinario?
Il film è ispirato al racconto Cuore di tenebra di Conrad ed è sceneggiato da John Milius. Coppola è senza dubbio il regista che ha segnato gli anni Settanta (Oscar a Il Padrino e a questo film) con la sua regia capace di raccontare con stile, seppure appesantita da qualche virtuosismo. Negli autori che cominciavano allora e che sarebbero diventati grandi (come Scott, Cimino e Cohen) la sua lezione sarebbe stata un riferimento imprescindibile. Senza pretendere di cambiare i destini del mondo, Coppola si impegna in un ragionamento sul bene e sul male e sulla loro relatività. Un uomo che ha la possibilità di esercitare un potere sempre maggiore può non riuscire a fermarsi in tempo e a individuare il confine fra la propria anima ancestrale, violenta e amorale, e quella civile, perdendo di vista la possibilità di convivere con gli altri, se sono più deboli. Naturalmente non era casuale che questa filosofia venisse applicata a quella guerra sciagurata che aveva confuso e stravolto tutti gli aspetti della morale americana. Kurtz, credendosi onnipotente, aveva perso di vista il proprio limite umano. Doveva essere distrutto. Il film sarà ricordato per il grande budget (quaranta milioni di dollari) e per le difficoltà di lavorazione nelle Filippine, per il boicottaggio da parte delle autorità americane, che naturalmente non condividevano la chiave negativa e disperata che Coppola dava della guerra. A tre lustri di distanza, Apocalypse Now si pone come manifesto attendibile di quella vicenda e come film dai grandi valori confermati.
