Contattati dalla Biblioteca Pubblica di New York sulla 5ª strada, si trovano per la prima volta faccia a faccia con un ectoplasma, quello dell'ex bibliotecaria Eleanor Twitty, la "Signora in Grigio". Raccolti dei campioni, iniziano a valutare le potenzialità della scoperta, proprio mentre vengono cacciati dal rettore dell'Università per mancanza di risultati nei rispettivi ambiti di ricerca.
