Louis Daniel Armstrong noto anche con il soprannome di Satchmo o Pops (1901-1971) è stato un trombettista e cantante statunitense; è stato uno tra i più famosi musicisti jazz del XX secolo, raggiungendo la fama inizialmente come trombettista, ma fu anche uno dei più importanti cantanti jazz, soprattutto verso la fine della carriera. Viene considerato una delle più grandi e influenti personalità in campo musicale del '900, e le sue innovazioni interpretative hanno permesso alla musica jazz di evolversi ed espandersi, aiutandola a diventare un genere celebre in tutto il mondo.
Ha un'infanzia difficile – il padre abbandona la famiglia quando è appena nato per poi farlo crescere con la nonna materna– ma la passione per la musica si manifesta fin da subito, incominciando a suonare in un gruppo all’età di undici anni.
Studia musica in riformatorio, dove viene mandato in seguito al furto di un fucile e – una volta in libertà – riesce a entrare nelle simpatie del musicista Joe "King" Oliver, di cui prende il posto nella the Kid Ory Band quando costui si trasferisce a Chicago. Con questa band registra il suo primo album nel 1923; sposa – nello stesso periodo - Lillian Harden, la pianista della Oliver band (che diventa la seconda delle sue quattro mogli) e su suo incoraggiamento si unisce alla Fletcher Henderson's band di New York, per poi aggiungersi ai Dreamland Syncopators, il gruppo di sua moglie. Contemporaneamente abbandona il corno – strumento suonato da sempre - per la tromba.
Armstrong ha la sua prima hit nel 1926 con "Muskrat ramble" per poi diventare ancora più conosciuto grazie al suo gruppo Louis Armstrong & His Stompers. Nel 1932 firma un contratto per la Columbia Records, per la quale escono "Chinatown, my Chinatown" e "You can depend on me", ma soprattutto "All of me" e "Love, you funny thing," grandi successi da classifica.
Dopo una tournée in Europa (alternando alla carriera musicale anche quella da attore), nella seconda metà degli anni Trenta continuano i riconoscimenti con brani come "Public melody number one" (1937), "When the saints go marching in" (1939) e "You won't be satisfied (until you break my heart)" (1946), ultimo duetto con Ella Fitzgerald.
Nel giugno del 1951 viene realizzato il disco "At The Symphony Hall", a cui seguono "Satch Plays Fats" e "Ella and Louis" (1956).
Armstrong continua ad andare in tour in maniera intensa, nonostante un attacco di cuore nel 1959. Nel 1964 riesce a raggiungere un altro successo con la canzone principale del musical Hello, Dolly!, brano che vince anche un Grammy come “best vocal performance”. Questi consensi vengono ripetuti quattro anni più tardi con "What a wonderful world", che conquista la vetta della classifica nell’aprile del 1968. All’inizio degli anni Settanta dirada le esibizioni dal vivo: muore all’età di 69 anni il 6 giugno 1971.
