Il giorno 8 gennaio 1935, sotto il segno del capricorno, in una piccola abitazione a Tupelo, Mississipi, nasce la leggenda del rock: il suo nome è Elvis Aaron Presley. La sua infanzia è povera e difficile: a soli sei anni - narra le leggenda - Elvis spasima per una bicicletta che purtroppo (o per fortuna) è molto cara, così la madre Gladys decide di regalargli per il suo compleanno una chitarra trovata in un negozio dell'usato del valore di 12 dollari e 95 centesimi. Questo gesto fa nascere in Elvis la passione per la sei corde e per la musica tanto da rimanere ore ed ore ad ascoltare i gospel e gli spiritual cantati nella chiesetta vicino casa.
A 13 anni si trasferisce con la famiglia a Memphis dove frequenta l'area di maggior cultura nera della città. Nessuno però scommette un centesimo sull'avvenire del giovane ragazzo che comincia a lavorare come camionista ostentando un enorme ciuffo imbrillantinato sulla fronte.
Negli Stati Uniti qualcosa sta per accadere, il conformismo e la moralità delle vecchie generazioni cominciano a scricchiolare, niente di meglio per un giovane bianco che propone musica ed eccentricità da nero.
Sam Phillips, della Sun Records, ascolta un brano di Elvis in un sottoscala e ne rimane folgorato; sborsa 4 dollari e firma il primo contratto con Presley: un piccolo investimento per una vera gallina dalle uova d'oro. I primi brani lo dimostreranno subito.
Agli inizi della sua carriera, il 3 aprile 1956, Elvis prende parte ad uno degli spettacoli TV più visti, il Milton Berle Show; 40 milioni di spettatori assistono entusiasti alle sue esibizioni, ma i milioni sono davvero molti per quanto riguarda i suoi guadagni e per le dimensioni di vendita dei suoi dischi.
Anche il cinema si occupa di Elvis: arriverà a girare 33 film. Il primo lanciò anche la memorabile "Love me tender" che fece amare Presley per la sua voce profonda e terribilmente romantica.
Elvis "the Pelvis", come lo chiamavano i suoi fans a proposito dei suoi piroettanti movimenti del bacino, all'apice della sua carriera sembrava un mito intramontabile: ovunque ragazzine in delirio pronte a lanciare gridolini isterici e indumenti intimi; le cronache di quegli anni narrano di una polizia in perenne difficoltà per garantire l'incolumità di Elvis dopo ogni concerto fino a permettergli di tornare sano e salvo nella sua Graceland, un edificio coloniale a Memphis circondato da un grande parco. Da una vecchia chiesetta sconsacrata Graceland è stata trasformata nella sua reggia: gli architetti con qualche milione di dollari hanno creato un palazzo reale, degno di un re, tutt'oggi splendida meta turistica.
Elvis non nascose mai il suo lato più ingenuo di fanciullo mai cresciuto, tanto che un giorno disse: "da bambino ero un sognatore; leggevo un fumetto e diventavo l'eroe di quel fumetto, vedevo un film e diventavo l'eroe di quel film; ogni cosa che ho sognato è diventata 100 volte più vera".
Il 24 marzo del 1958 viene arruolato e destinato in un centro d'addestramento in Texas con il numero di matricola US53310761; un servizio militare anomalo, sotto la costante presenza di giornalisti, fotografi e giovani fans che assediano ogni sua libera uscita; si congeda il 5 marzo 1960, torna sul palco e duetta con Frank Sinatra al "Welcome Home Elvis".
La morte della madre Gladys è un brutto colpo per l'equilibrio emotivo: il forte legame troncato bruscamente diventa causa di malesseri e stati d'ansia. Ma il Re è tutt'altro che sconfitto; un giorno incontra una ragazzina 14enne, Priscilla figlia di un capitano dell'aviazione statunitense aggregato alle forze della NATO stanziate in Germania; un colpo di fulmine che il 1 maggio 1967 diventa un matrimonio. Esattamente 9 mesi dopo, il 1 febbraio 1968, nasce Lisa Marie (che sposerà il re del pop, Michael Jackson).
Dopo otto anni di assenza dalle scene nel 1968 Elvis torna protagonista di concerti live con lo spettacolo " Elvis the special Comeback": torna vestito di pelle nera con lo stesso carisma e la stessa energia che hanno caratterizzato e catturato le generazioni durante il decennio precedente.
Nel 1973 entra nella storia della televisione e dello spettacolo, con "Aloha from Hawaii via satellite", uno special che trasmesso in 40 paesi raggiunge più di un miliardo di spettatori.
Il 12 febbraio 1977, inizia una nuova tournée che si conclude il 26 giugno.
Deciso a prendersi un periodo di riposo, torna nella sua casa a Memphis. E' un giorno di piena estate quando viene ricoverato d'urgenza al Baptist Memorial Hospital; i medici lo dichiarano morto per aritmia cardiaca: sono le 15,30 del 16 agosto 1977.
Ma Elvis è veramente morto?
Sono in molti ad avere questo dubbio; così capita che la leggenda ogni tanto segnali la presenza di un tranquillo pensionato molto simile a Elvis a New York, a Los Angeles piuttosto che su una spiaggia caraibica.
Sicuramente Elvis non è morto per chi lo ha tanto amato e continua a renderlo l'uomo dello spettacolo che guadagna di più; in una speciale classifica dedicata ai guadagni post-mortem, Elvis stacca personaggi del calibro di Bob Marley, Marilyn Monroe e John Lennon. Solo nel 2001 Elvis Presley ha guadagnato 37 milioni di dollari.
Di Elvis, Bob Dylan ha detto: "La prima volta che ascoltai Elvis mi fece sentire come se finalmente fossi riuscito ad evadere da una prigione, ma la cosa veramente curiosa è che in vita mia non ero mai stato messo in una prigione".
Oggi i tributi dedicati ad Elvis Presley sono innumerevoli e, come si addice ad un vero mito, chiunque può star certo che la sua leggenda non morirà mai.
