Bruce Frederick Springsteen nasce il 23 settembre 1949 al Monmouth Memorial Hospital di Long Branch, New Jersey.
Bruce è il primogenito di due residenti di Freehold, una piccola cittadina operaia del New Jersey: il padre Douglas, di origine irlandese, si guadagna da vivere collezionando una serie infinita di occupazioni, dalla guardia carceraria al guidatore di taxi; la madre, Adele Zirilli, è figlia di immigrati italiani e lavora come segretaria. A completare la famiglia Springsteen arriveranno nel 1950 Virginia e nel 1962 Pamela.
Bruce trascorre tutta la sua infanzia e buona parte dell'adolescenza nei ristretti confini di Freehold, dove, in una serata del settembre 1956, assiste in tv all'esibizione di Elvis Presley all'Ed Sullivan Show, decidendo all'istante che cosa farà da grande: il cantante di rock'n'roll. Non cambierà più idea.
Il giovane Springsteen è timido e introverso fin quasi alla patologia, ma quando ha una chitarra a tracolla pare di colpo prendere vita. Nel 1965 entra a far parte dei Castiles, una band di ragazzi di Freehold che arriva a due passi dal pubblicare un singolo prima di sciogliersi nel 1968.
Mentre la famiglia Springsteen si trasferisce in California, Bruce rimane nel New Jersey e inizia a frequentare Asbury Park, piccolo centro sulla costa che in quegli anni vanta una scena musicale straordinariamente viva; ne diventa in breve tempo uno degli esponenti di maggior spicco, riunendo attorno a sé molti dei musicisti che qualche anno dopo diverranno l'ossatura della sua E Street Band. Nel suo periodo ad Asbury Park Springsteen forma diversi gruppi, uno dei quali, gli Steel Mill, raggiunge uno straordinario successo locale ma non un contratto discografico.
L'incontro con Mike Appel, un produttore di New York, dà una svolta improvvisa alla sua carriera; Appel difetta in buona educazione, ma la sua irruenza e la sua genuina ammirazione per Springsteen riescono a far ottenere al suo giovane cliente un'audizione alla Columbia Records con John Hammond, il leggendario talent scout scopritore di Bob Dylan. Bastano due canzoni a convincere Hammond che Springsteen merita un contratto con la Columbia. I primi due dischi, "Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ" e "The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle", entrambi del 1973, ottengono ottime recensioni, ma vendite meno che scarse. La Columbia inizia a chiamare Bruce "la follia di Hammond" e si prepara a rescindere il contratto; Springsteen non si perde d'animo e punta su quella che è sempre stata e sempre sarà in seguito la sua arma principale: le esibizioni dal vivo. Con la sua E Street Band si lancia in una lunghissima serie di concerti di straordinaria intensità. Ad uno di questi assiste anche Jon Landau, critico tra i più influenti della rivista 'Rolling Stone'. Landau rimane folgorato e scrive un lungo, commovente articolo che nella parte centrale recita "stasera ho visto il futuro del rock'n'roll e il suo nome è Bruce Springsteen"; la Columbia capisce che tutto sommato "la follia di Hammond" merita un'altra chance.
E' una saggia decisione: nel 1975 esce "Born to run", uno dei dischi fondamentali della storia del rock; questa volta oltre alle critiche esaltanti arriva anche il successo di vendite, che però ha un effetto collaterale: mettere in evidenza che il contratto firmato con Appel priva Bruce di ogni diritto sulle proprie canzoni. La lunga battaglia legale che ne scaturisce terrà Springsteen lontano dagli studi di registrazione per più di due anni. Alla fine Appel se ne va con i soldi, Bruce riconquista i diritti e Landau diventa il suo nuovo manager.
Il 1978 è l'anno di "Darkness on the Edge of Town" e di un tour in cui ogni concerto sembra scrivere una nuova pagina nella storia del rock'n'roll. L'album, forse il più importante nell'evoluzione artistica di Springsteen, fissa le coordinate della sua poetica: storie comuni di gente altrettanto comune, tratteggiate in modo da far emergere l'eroismo nascosto nel vivere quotidiano e vicende di uomini le cui opzioni principali non sono vincere o perdere, ma perdere con dignità o farsi inghiottire dall'oscurità della solitudine. Queste tematiche vengono ampliate due anni dopo nel doppio "The River" che porterà Springsteen, nel 1981, a compiere la sua prima vera tournée nel Vecchio Continente. Il contatto prolungato con una realtà culturale distante da quella statunitense e la lettura illuminante di una serie di libri consigliati dall'amico/manager Landau portano un profondo cambiamento in Springsteen. "Nebraska", uscito nel 1982, ne è la migliore testimonianza: è un disco acustico, inciso in totale solitudine su un vecchio registratore a quattro piste, che narra storie di violenza, morte ed alienazione.
Parte del materiale inciso per Nebraska, ma che non ha trovato posto nel disco, forma la struttura di "Born in the USA", che nel 1984 regala a Springsteen il suo più grande successo commerciale di sempre. La title-track, misteriosamente scambiata per un inno nazionalista, è in realtà il grido di rabbia di un reduce dal Vietnam che sente di essere stato prima usato, poi umiliato e infine dimenticato dal suo stesso Paese. Nel 1985 Bruce sposa la modella Julianne Phillips, mentre il "Born in the USA tour" batte una serie impressionante di record, regalandogli una fama planetaria.
Springsteen però realizza presto che la sovraesposizione non fa per lui. Decide perciò di andare in netta controtendenza incidendo nel 1987 "Tunnel of Love", disco che parla con toni sommessi del rapporto uomo-donna e delle sue mille zone d'ombra.
Che in quel momento l'argomento sia centrale nella vita di Springsteen lo dimostra anche la separazione, avvenuta nei primi mesi dell'anno seguente, con la Phillips e l'inizio della relazione con la sua corista Patti Scialfa, che diventerà sua moglie due anni dopo. Lo stesso anno Springsteen e la E Street Band partecipano con Youssou N'Dour, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel e Sting a un tour mondiale organizzato da Amnesty International, al termine del quale Bruce decide di dare un taglio netto a molte cose: scioglie, per la delusione dei suoi fan, la E Street Band e lascia quel New Jersey di cui era divenuto il simbolo.
Si trasferisce con Patti Scialfa a Los Angeles dove nel 1990 nasce Evan James, il primo figlio della coppia (seguiranno Jessica Rae nel 1991 e Sam Ryan nel 1994).
Interrompe un silenzio durato quasi cinque anni pubblicando contemporaneamente nel 1992 due album, "Human Touch" e "Lucky Town"; i dischi non vendono quanto sperato e la successiva tournée ha un buon successo, ma non convince del tutto i fan, per lo più diffidenti verso i nuovi musicisti che hanno sostituito la E Street Band.
Nel 1994 Bruce Springsteen vince un Oscar per la toccante "Streets of Philadelphia", scritta per il film Philadelphia dell'amico Jonathan Demme, e l'anno successivo pubblica un disco semi-acustico, "The Ghost of Tom Joad". Il cuore dell'album è composto da storie di emigranti messicani che attraversano il confine illegalmente per cercare una fortuna che non troveranno.
Ad un lungo tour acustico in piccoli teatri, ne segue uno decisamente elettrico che segna il ritorno della E Street Band. Si tratta di tutto fuorché di un tour d'addio: nel 2002 Springsteen con l'apporto della sua band incide "The Rising": è un'amara riflessione sull'America post 11 settembre e sull'impatto che la tragedia ha avuto sulle vite delle molte persone che ne sono state direttamente toccate. Il tour che segue si protrae per più di un anno, segnando ogni sera nuovi record e riproponendo ancora una volta la straordinarietà della dimensione live di Springsteen: concerti di tre ore segnati da un'eccezionale carica d'energia in cui momenti di intensa drammaticità si mescolano ad altri di puro e sfrenato divertimento e nei quali viene annullata ogni barriera tra il pubblico e la band.
Il successivo disco di inediti arriva nella primavera del 2005: registrato senza la E Street Band (ma sempre con Brendan O'Brien come produttore), si intitola "Devils & Dust", e segna un parziale ritorno di Springsteen alle atmosfere folk. A sorpresa, l'anno seguente annuncia per fine aprile 2006 la pubblicazione di un nuovo disco in studio: "We Shall Overcome - The Seeger Sessions": il suo primo disco di cover, a cui segue un nuovo tour.
A metà del mese di agosto 2007 viene annunciato "Magic", un nuovo album prodotto da Brendan O'Brien ed inciso con la E Street Band. Il disco viene pubblicato ad inizio ottobre: subito parte il tour, prima in America, poi in Europa, che si protrae fino all'estate 2008.
Nell'autunno dello stesso anno Springsteen si impegna nella campagna elettorale per Barack Obama, ed in una di queste occasioni presenta la nuova canzone "Working on a dream".
Qualche settimana dopo viene annunciata l'uscita del nuovo omonimo album che esce a fine gennaio 2009.
A sessant'anni di età il Boss non ha nessuna intenzione di lesinare energie, soprattutto sul palco dove ogni esibizione è sempre una grande espressione di festa e gioia.
Infatti, negli ultimi due anni ha rilasciato l'album The Promise e Wrecking Ball, il quale, quest'ultimo, è il diciassettesimo album in studio di Bruce Springsteen, in uscita il 6 marzo 2012. L'album è stato anticipato dal singolo We Take Care of Our Own, uscito il 19 gennaio
