Il gruppo rock U2 nasce nel 1976 a Dublino. Con 16 album pubblicati, più di 170 milioni di dischi venduti e il maggior numero di Grammy Awards ricevuti da un gruppo, gli U2 hanno conquistato un posto d'onore nella storia della musica di tutti i tempi. La loro attività musicale è da sempre affiancata dal loro impegno per la risoluzione della questione irlandese e dei diritti civili nel mondo. La formazione originale: Paul David Hewson detto "Bono" (10 maggio 1960, Dublino) è il frontman della band (voce, chitarra e armonica), David Howell Evans detto "The Edge" (8 agosto 1961, Barking) è il chitarrista, oltre che voce d'accompagnamento, Adam Clayton (13 marzo 1960, Chinnor) è il bassista (adora i Fender Jazz Bass e Precision Bass), Lawrence "Larry" Mullen, Jr. (31 ottobre 1961, Artane) è il batterista. Prima tournée nei locali di Londra nel 1979. L'anno seguente, il primo album Boy. E nel 1981 concerti in Inghilterra, Belgio, Svezia, Olanda, Francia e Germania. Boy arriva anche negli Usa, ma con una copertina diversa per fugare ogni dubbio su presunte allusioni alla pedofilia. La scalata al successo è cominciata. Nell'estate successiva, gli U2 fanno da spalla ai Police in alcuni concerti europei. E' la stagione dei singoli , , , che anticipano l'uscita del terzo album War (1983). Nel 1985 arrivano per la prima volta in Italia (Milano e Bologna). E il 13 luglio partecipano al Live Aid: il successo è tale da contringere Bono e compagni a prolungare l'esibizione di ben 15 minuti. Gli U2 partecipano praticamente a tutti gli eventi umanitari. Nel 1987 esce The Joshua Tree, forse oggi il loro più celebre album (oltre 20 milioni di copie vendute), che conquista le meggiori classifiche internazionali, grazie anche al singolo . Nel 1991, Achtung Baby, album della nuova fase U2. L'avventura degli U2 prosegue senza sosta fino ad oggi, passando dal fortunatissimo Vertigo Tour del 2005. Alcune curiosità: Bono ha dichiarato che non arriverà mai più con la voce dove arrivava ai tempi di The Joshua Tree, non per l'età ma perché per colpa del fumo; il milionario Harry Crosbie vorrebbe costruire un museo a Dublino sull'esempio di quello dedicato ai Beatles a Liverpool; Barack Obama ha usato come sottofondo per la sua campagna elettorale a candidato democratico, la canzone City of Blinding Lights.
