I Black Sabbath sono un gruppo musicale heavy metal britannico, formatosi a Birmingham nel 1968. La formazione "storica" era costituita da Ozzy Osbourne (voce), Tony Iommi (chitarra), Geezer Butler (basso) e Bill Ward (batteria), rimasta invariata dal 1969 al 1978. In seguito, ci furono numerosi cambi nell'organico della band e Iommi rimase l'unico componente fisso.
I Black Sabbath sono stati tra i primi gruppi heavy metal della storia ed hanno contribuito grandemente allo sviluppo del genere. Dal 1970 al 2010 hanno venduto pi? di 100 milioni di dischi in tutto il mondo. Considerati tra i gruppi pi? influenti di tutto il genere heavy metal, hanno contribuito in modo determinante alla nascita del suo sottogenere doom metal. Nel 2003 vengono inseriti all'85? posto nella lista dei 100 migliori artisti secondo Rolling Stone; 3 dei loro album sono stati citati nella lista dei 500 migliori album secondo Rolling Stone: Master of Reality (al 300? posto), Black Sabbath (243? posto) e Paranoid (131? posto), ma la loro consacrazione definitiva nella storia della musica avviene nel 2006 quando vengono inseriti nella prestigiosa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I Black Sabbath hanno avuto un enorme impatto sulle generazioni future. A loro vengono riconosciute influenze dirette ed indirette su diversi generi musicali: Heavy metal, Thrash, Stoner rock, Doom. Eppure, nonostante abbiano segnato la nascita di questi generi, essi non vengono mai annoverati in nessuno di essi. Ci? perch? la loro musica presenta caratteristiche sonore che, da un punto di vista stilistico, li vede, a turno, rappresentanti dell'uno o dell'altro genere. In risposta a domande con cui gli veniva chiesto quale fosse il genere da essi suonato, Tony Iommi ha pi? volte citato l'espressione Heavy Rock, non a torto visto che, probabilmente, ? l'unica in assoluto pi? confacente.
