Dopo una colonna sonora importante come quella de La compagnia dell’anello, che gli è valsa anche un premio Oscar, Howard Shore aveva bisogno di qualche aiuto dal mondo esterno; man mano che la storia de Il signore degli anelli fa il suo corso, si uniscono al cast iniziale composto da Shore (alla direzione), la London Philharmonic, i cori del Voices of London e della Oratory School Schola Boys’ Choir nuovi elementi: il giovane soprano Ben Del Maestro, la cantante di origini indiane ma nata e cresciuta in Inghilterra Sheila Chandra, e l’ugola angelica dei Cocteau Twins Elizabeth Fraser oltre alla voce dell’italo-islandese Emiliana Torrini (Gollum’s Song) forse l’unica componente davvero pop di tutta l’opera, ma che regala un’interpretazione degna dell’avventura nella Terra di Mezzo. Intorno a queste divine creature dalle sembianze e dai timbri così diversi prende forma la storia de Le Due Torri, qui narrata musicalmente come proseguimento logico al primo episodio della saga, senza però cadere nella tentazione e nella trappola della ripetitività. Shore amplia il mondo sonoro de Il signore degli anelli utilizzando nuovi strumenti, oltre a quelli celtici già usati nel primo capitolo: l’hardinger, un violino norvegese, per creare il segno di riconoscimento di Rohan, il rhaita, una sorta di oboe comune fra i musicisti nordafricani, per descrivere il tema di Mordor, e poi il cimbalon, il dilruba (una specie di violino dal manico lungo) il log drum e tanti altri strumenti tradizionali provenienti da tutto il mondo messi insieme da Shore per creare ambientazioni uniche a dipingere le terre fantastiche e i fantastici personaggi nati dalla penna del filologo e narratore britannico. Così Le Due Torri riconferma la grandiosità di un compositore che ha saputo far sue le visioni di Tolkien – e di Peter Jackson – trasformandole in musica maestosa.
