The year is 2030. Ted Mosby is relaying the story of how he met his wife to his daughter and son. The story starts in the year 2005, when then twenty-seven year old architect Ted was spurred on to want to get married after his best friends from his college days at Wesleyan, lawyer Marshall Eriksen, who was his roommate at the time and kindergarten teacher Lily Aldrin, got engaged after nine years of dating each other. Ted's new quest in life was much to the dismay of his womanizing friend, Barney Stinson. But soon after Marshall and Lily's engagement, Ted believed that his life mate was going to be news reporter and aspiring news anchor Robin Scherbatsky, who, despite having had a romantic relationship with her after this time, ended up being who the kids know as their "Aunt" Robin. As Ted relays the story to his kids, the constants are that their Uncle Marshall, Aunt Lily, Uncle Barney and Aunt Robin are always in the picture and thus have something to do with how he got together
How I Met Your Mother - Alla fine arriva mamma (How I Met Your Mother) è una sitcom statunitense prodotta dal 2005. Creata da Craig Thomas e Carter Bays, la serie viene trasmessa in prima visione negli Stati Uniti da CBS dal 19 settembre 2005. In Italia la serie è trasmessa dall'11 febbraio 2008; inizialmente le prime tre stagioni sono state trasmesse in prima visione da Italia 1 con il titolo E alla fine arriva mamma!. Dalla quarta stagione la serie è trasmessa in prima visione sul digitale terrestre da Joi con il solo titolo originale How I Met Your Mother, e successivamente replicata in chiaro da Italia 1 con lo stesso titolo. L'edizione italiana home video della serie ha infine assunto il titolo How I Met Your Mother - Alla fine arriva mamma.
Sin dalla prima stagione, la serie ha ottenuto buoni ascolti e una critica prevalentemente positiva. Per location, comicità e dinamiche di gruppo, molti critici hanno definito How I Met Your Mother come l'erede ideale di Friends, sitcom simbolo degli anni novanta, conclusasi nel 2004.
2030. Ted Mosby, un affermato architetto, fa sedere i suoi due figli adolescenti sul divano di casa, e inizia a raccontare loro gli eventi che, venticinque anni prima, lo hanno portato a conoscere quella che sarebbe diventata la sua futura moglie e la loro madre, senza però rivelarne mai il nome.
Ted inizia così a ricordare di quando, nel 2005, era soltanto un giovane ragazzo a New York, single ma quasi ossessionato dalla ricerca della donna giusta da sposare. Ted viveva assieme ai suoi amici Marshall Eriksen e Lily Aldrin, una giovane coppia, fidanzati dai tempi del college. Del suo gruppo di amici faceva parte anche Barney Stinson, un ricco donnaiolo dalla battuta pronta, sempre a caccia del divertimento più assoluto. Ted inizia a raccontare gli eventi dal giorno in cui ha conosciuto Robin Scherbatsky, una ragazza canadese, reporter di una piccola emittente televisiva, che presto si unisce al gruppo, e con la quale instaura un complicato rapporto di amicizia/amore. Usando come pretesto il racconto del primo incontro con la loro madre, Ted descrive ai figli la sua vita e quella dei suoi amici negli anni duemila, e tutte le difficoltà sentimentali che ha dovuto affrontare prima di incontrare la donna della sua vita.
