James Bond viene incaricato di scoprire la produzione di sofisticatissimi microchips da computer simili a quelli realizzati nella Silicon Valley. Ovviamente, anche i Servizi segreti sovietici sono interessati all'affare, Bond viene inviato a Parigi, dove avvicina Max Zorin - un industriale di orgine russa - fingendo di interessarsi ad un acquisto in un allevamento di cavalli. Nella villa di Zorin, aiutato da un collega,. Bond riesce a penetrare in un laboratorio sotterraneo e là trova le prove che gli occorrono. Il collega, tuttavia, viene ucciso da May Day, una spietata collaboratrice di Zorin, che per poco non riesce ad uccidere anche Bond. Zorin, è in realtà un agente del KGB, ora deciso a tradire i russi e a vendere loro un progetto spettacolare: provocare nel sottosuolo della Silicon Valley un movimento tellurico, destinato a distruggere tutte le installazioni tecnologiche. Bond riesce ad individuare la base operativa di Zorin e vi si introduce, accompagnato da Stacey Sutton figlia di un ex proprietario del luogo. La miniera viene allagata ma Bond riesce a far scoppiare all'esterno della miniera il terribile ordigno. Zorin fugge su un dirigibile con Stacey, ma Bond riesce a fare incagliare il dirigibile su un pilone del ponte di San Francisco. Dopo una spaventosa lotta James Bond uccide Zorin e recuperata la ragazza.
